USTMA Thanks NHTSA for Steps To Prevent Tire Mislabeling

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has noticed that some UTV and ATV tires have been improperly labeled as compliant with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, and should be labeled as “Not for Highway Service.” The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association thanked NHTSA for a June 3 letter on the issue.

According to USTMA, the DOT rating cannot be displayed on any UTV or ATV tires, nor can the words “approved,” “certified,” or “compliant.” Use of the DOT rating or any of the above words are misleading and do not apply to these kinds of tires.

“We know off-road and all-terrain vehicles are especially popular during the summer months, so we applaud NHTSA for this important and well-timed information to help ensure consumer safety. We worked closely with NHTSA to raise this important safety issue and will assist in publicizing the information,” USTMA Senior Vice President and General Counsel Tracey Norberg said.
