Buying a Surplus HMMV Is a Terrible Idea

Watch Grind Hard Plumbing meet its match.

You buy two, see, so one can tow the other…YouTube

The crew at Grind Hard Plumbing Co. are our kind of masochists. They’ve built a following around all sorts of madness, from building a Hayabusa-powered snow bike to an insane “monster chopper.” They aren’t the kind of team to lie down at the first sign of a challenge, but their latest effort has put up more of a fight than they bargained for. The theory was sound: Buy a couple of surplus HMMVs from a government auction and drive them 1,500 miles home. Those of you with a military background are likely already laughing.

The first episode saw the guys pick up two rigs from the auction. The first, a naturally aspirated unit, seemed tired but serviceable. The second turbocharged rig? It put up a fight from the word go. It ran and drove, but quickly showed itself to be in need of a flex plate. And maybe also a bullet. After many parking lot heroics, the team finally got on the road and headed for Las Vegas. That’s when the second episode picks up. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t go well. Check it out below.
