There’s a massive heat wave in the eastern US right now, which means your risk of dehydration while outside has substantially increased. UTV Driver is based in Knoxville, Tennessee, which means we’re feeling it too.
After getting blasted with extreme heat for the last few days, we just wanted to put out a reminder to stay safe and hydrated if you decide to hit the trail this week. We’ve consistently seen temperatures of over 100 degrees, and that takes a toll when you’re outside for any reason.
Heat stroke is very real, so you should make sure to look out for dizziness, headaches, lightheadedness, or nausea. If you notice any of these symptoms, get the affected person to a cool, safe place as soon as possible and call 911. Cleveland Clinic recommends placing a damp cloth on them to lower body temperature, changing it out for a new cloth every minute or so. It might seem surprising, but don’t give them water or any other fluids. A person experiencing heat stroke might accidentally inhale the liquid, which could cause even further problems.
Bring plenty of water, make frequent rest stops, and make sure to check on everyone in your group. We hit the trail to have a good time, but medical emergencies in the sticks are anything but a good time. Let’s focus on trail hazards, not heat-related ones. Stay safe, stay hydrated, and above all, have fun!
