Electric vehicle startup Volcon ePowersports has signed a memorandum of understanding with tire giant BFGoodrich, the Texas-based company announced recently. The news comes days after the brand’s quarterly report revealed that contracts had been signed with 83 dealers through March 31, 2022. Intentions are for the companies to work together on tire and suspension technology specific to electric UTVs.

Volcon is looking to develop tires best suited to its powerful upcoming Stag side-by-side. While electric vehicles can use tires that work on conventional internal-combustion machines, the immediate power offered by EVs is an opportunity to build a tire with optimal off-idle grip.

Electric UTVs also tend to be quite a bit heavier than their ICE counterparts, so we bet Volcon is looking for added durability as well. In addition, the two companies will be working on an “optimized tire-pressure monitoring system.” We don’t have any more details on what that means, but the companies also said their intention is to implement BFGoodrich’s ActivAir Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS). This is a setup that works like the inflation system made famous on Hummer H1s—it allows the operator to inflate and deflate tires at the push of a button from inside the cabin.

Volcon is taking orders for its first side-by-side, the Stag UTV, starting July 1, 2022. It will be delivered with BFGoodrich’s Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 UTV Tire standard on all 2023 Stag LE models.
