Three months ago, Segway Powersports driver Jacob Zuccone and co-driver Samantha Rode campaigned the new Super Villain SX20T in its first racing test, the Silver State 300. Crossing the line 31st out of 50 finishers can be considered a highly successful outing for an unproven rig, since making the checkered flag at all is a tough task for even experienced teams. Zuccone and Rode will be at it again next week for the Vegas to Reno race on August 15.
Organizer Best in the Desert (BITD) calls the event “500 miles of dust, rocks, and glory,” Segway calls it “The ultimate proving ground.” So far, the entry list counts 247 racers who’ll line up in the town of Crystal, Nevada (79 miles northwest of Vegas), to flog their rigs along the Nevada-California border to Reno.
Segway’s missing from that list at the time of writing. We suspect the team is still working under BITD’s Super 10 rules, introduced at the beginning of the year as a kind of unlimited class. The entry list doesn’t show any Super 10 entries; we’ll look out for Segway and anyone else on the results list. As with the Silver State 300, the Super Villain SX20T might be in a class of one (or more), but finishing times and overall results will be closely watched by all.
The manufacturer isn’t only taking a team to the race, it’s taking camera crews to cover the race with the help of Star Stream. You can follow the action online at Segway Powersports, the party begins at 1:30 p.m. Eastern time, 10:30 a.m Pacific. Check it out if you like dark horse contenders and up-and-coming race programs.
